Production Planning-Moving Beyond The Last Planner System

Panelists:

Klas Berghede, The Boldt Company

Dan Murphy, The Boldt Company

Johnny Legnard, KHS&S

Abstract:

In manufacturing, TAKT time is a well developed concept to promote flow and eliminate waste. This presentation will provide the audience with an idea of how TAKT time is used in the field of construction. The team will share how they went about introducing TAKT time sequencing and the lessons they learned on the way. (Note, the presentation is an updated version of what was presented at the Annual LCI Congress in Pasadena 2011, including a reflection of impact to overall project success)

This will be a presentation exploring lessons learned including:

  • The value of “flow and predictability”
  • The lack of clear handoffs in traditional approach
  • The impact of planning and training on production
  • It will also illustrate the importance of production planning and management.

Date and Time:                  Wednesday, January 11, 2012 from 6-9pm

Early Registration / Cancellation Deadline: Friday, January 6, 2011. There will be no refunds after this time. Each person must register and pay to attend the meeting and dinner. Please help us save time, expense, and avoid people showing up at the last minute… plan ahead and register early!

Late Registration: Available after close of regular registration. Subject to availability.

Value Added Proposition:

You will get a real example of how TAKT time sequencing was used in the construction of a local hospital and its exterior enclosure.

Agenda:

1) Introductions: Welcome to LCI – NorCal Chapter

2) Salad Chat: In the construction of the Empire State Building, Richmond Shreve were quoted to say: “We always thought of it as a parade in which each marcher kept pace and the parade marched out of the top of the building, still in perfect step. Sometimes we thought of it as a great assembly line - only the assembly line did the moving; the finished product stayed in place”

  • As a table/team please discuss the notion of flow as described in the quote and agree on an example where you have experienced flow in your line of work.

3) Introductions and Share Salad Chat Highlights: A "lightning round" report-out of your table’s salad chat.

4) Main Course: Featured Program

5) Dessert: A “lightning round” to share your comments and ask questions about the featured program.

6) Next meeting overview

7) Training opportunities – Coming events

8) Plus / Delta: Feedback to improve each meeting.

LCI Nor Cal Community of Practice

The Lean Construction Institute (LCI), a non-profit research organization, was founded in August 1997. LCI's purpose is to develop and disseminate new knowledge regarding the management of work in design, engineering and construction for capital facilities. LCI has developed the Lean Project Delivery System© (LPDS), and the Last Planner® System of production control. Lean Construction is a production management-based approach to project delivery - a new way to design and build capital facilities. Lean production management has caused a revolution in manufacturing design, supply and assembly. Applied to construction, Lean changes the way work is done throughout the delivery process. Lean Construction extends from the objectives of a lean production system - maximize value and minimize waste - to specific techniques and applies them in a new project delivery process extending from project definition through design, supply and assembly.

The Northern California Community of Practice (CoP) of LCI  provides local lean support to owners, architects and designers, engineers, contractors, specialty contractors, and suppliers.  We invite owners and project delivery team members to meet together as a Community of Practice to learn, share, and develop a lean community in Northern California. As a regional forum for conversations among practitioners, the CoP will help create a new common sense for the AEC industry as LCI continues to build knowledge in design and construction.
